 | Is Showing your Art in a Co-op Gallery Worthwhile? | | by Xanadu Gallery Owner Jason Horejs | | | Last week, I wrote a post about the advisability of showing your work in a "vanity"gallery. This post received a lot of attention and was one of the most commented upon posts I've ever shared, at least in terms of the total length of the comments. I appreciate the input from the community and the willingness to share personal insight from past experiences. In the comments, it became clear that there is some confusion, or at least a blurry understanding, of the difference between a pay-for-display ("vanity") gallery and cooperative galleries. I feel it would be a good idea to continue the conversation by expanding it to cover this second type of gallery. If you're in the area, stop by and see what's new at Xanadu Gallery! For those of you who aren't in the area, I thought it would be fun for you to visit the gallery through photos. I mentioned the increasing importance of self-promotion for artists. I talked about the move toward increasing online sales. Finally, I predicted that we would see a rise in the number of art galleries charging a fee to show and sell artwork. Even as I write this, I can see that there's great discussion to be had in all of those topics (watch for future blog posts!). It's the third and final point is wish to focus on here, however. I frequently have artists write me about their encounters with galleries that are asking for a fee to show work. Last week, for example, I received the following email from artist Kim Jones- Read More . . . | |
