Jeanie ThornXanadu is pleased to welcome Jeanie Thorn as one of our new in-gallery artists. Her amazing steel wall sculptures will make a perfect addition to your contemporary art collection.

Jeanie Thorn began her art education at Boston University School of Fine Arts and continued her studies at Arizona State University College of Architecture where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Design.  After learning to weld she decided to combine her love of art and architecture to create unique works with a
modern clean line sensibility.

Jeanie recently spoke with RedDot:

"My art reflects my interest in the organization of form as it relates to the built environment and to other man made objects.

All Geared Up by Jeanie Thorn"I am especially intrigued by the designs of other cultures that shape our perceptions of art through their unique and indigenous aesthetic. Textile design holds a particular fascination for me as well as jewelry design and other types of human adornment. What we think of as modern art today can very well be traced back to the artifacts, patterns and motifs created by ancient civilizations.

"I am also interested in the purity of composition in contrast to the imperfections inherent in all metals which results in a richer sensory experience. It is my intention that these surface transitions create the desire for closer inspection and reflection.

"In addition, the commitment of welding my own work forces me to face the challenges of construction while maintaining the vision of my design. Problem solving is paramount in the fabrication process and it is often necessary to make adjustments as the work progresses. The outcome is often determined by the constraints of the tools, the amount of heat applied, and the personality of the steel. The elements of line, plane, shape, texture, proportion and color along with the characteristics of a limited palette of materials and the constant editing and elimination of the unnecessary while attempting to maintain the artistic poetry, all combine to give the final expression to the piece."

Two of Jeanie's artworks were recently included in a prestigious juried exhibition at Arizona State University. One, titled "The Eddy," sold at the show.

Please drop into the gallery or visit our website soon to see Jeanie's incredible art. We would love to be of service in adding an original Jeanie Thorn to your collection today!

An Intimate Guide to African Blue Pietersite
by Mary Mauritzen, Jewelry Artisan and Owner, PC Goddess
Mary Mauritzen, Jewelry JewelryBlue Pietersite is an extremely rare and beautiful stone that is found in Africa and China.  As of this time there is only one operable mine, which is in Namibia, Africa.

Pietersite was first discovered by Sid Pieters in 1962 while prospecting farm land in Namibia. He registered the find in the mineral records of Britain, which was published in 1964, naming the material "Pietersite."  Pietersite is a tough material and registers 7 on the MOHS hardness scale.

Blue is the rarest color, followed by red. The blues range from a baby blue to dark midnight hue. Golds can be light to very deep and rich, sometimes having a reddish hue. All fibrous color variations will have a superb and striking chatoyancy, the bright and subtly changing shimmer of color that moves along the surface of a gemstone as it is viewed from varying angles. This effect is best seen in beautiful cabochon pendants, which I choose by hand and use in my designs.  Colors include various blues, golds and reds, that may appear together or alone.

Blue Pietersite/Sterling Silver Necklace by Mary MauritzenOn the metaphysical side, Pietersite is said to contain the "Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven", assisting one in the recognition of the beauty of the soul.  Pietersite boosts the morale and teaches pride, builds self-esteem and self-image.

Blue Pietersite is highly prized and very collectible.  We would like to help you get your collection started by offering 10% off of any Blue Pietersite set on Xanadu Gallery's website.  We hope you will treasure and enjoy this amazing stone as much as we do.
