I have long advocated the importance of creating the highest quality work in order to maximize your sales and your chances for gallery representation. A discussion of quality begins with materials. Are you investing in the highest quality materials you can obtain? Setting aside framing for two-dimensional artists and basing for three-dimensional artists, it's critical you strive to find the best materials you can obtain for your art. I find that many artists, early on in their careers, are tempted to skimp with materials in order to save money. Marketing art can be a huge challenge. How do you get your art in front of people who will not only love it, but want to buy it as well? Should you invest in magazine ads? Participate in art festivals? Show your work in a local gallery? All valid tactics you should be pursuing, but you may be overlooking your best marketing opportunity: Selling to collectors who have purchased your work in the past. This seems like an obvious suggestion - after all, past buyers clearly like your work and have explicitly told you they are qualified to purchase(nothing says "I can buy" like pulling out the credit card and buying). Yet I find that many artists and galleries are not putting their full efforts into marketing to past purchasers. Today we look at artists who are reporting strong sales for their work over the last year to see what they are doing to generate those sales and their attitudes about the market. The first thing we learn about $50k+ artists is that they are overwhelmingly full-time artists - 91% report that art is their full time occupation. This should come as no surprise.
